BIG TREE STATE

your guide to Tasmania’s giant trees

The Tyenna &
Florentine Valley

These valleys hold a wealth of giant trees that are even less known than those of the Styx Valley. It is another example of the true giant tree potential of Tasmania with almost 20 known giants. But the future of the Florentine as a site for big tree hunting is set to explode with dozens of LiDar hits yet to be explored.

Situated at the same access point at the Western Styx Valley, and just 5km out of the mountain biking destination of Maydena, the Florentine receives only a small percentage of the tourists that it deserves. Home to the deepest cave system in Australia at 400m, this area’s geology and forest ecology are of global significance.

Your Responsibilities,
Don’t mess it up.

Be respectful to the forest and the trees, you are responsible for helping to protect them. these trees are hundreds of years old and many are in the later stages of their lives. Every person has an impact, minimise it.

All information is provided in good faith “as is” without guarantee of accuracy. Navigating off-track in the Tasmanian wilderness is treacherous and exposure to wild weather and the elements should be expected if you choose to look for trees.

Must See Giant Tree Destinations

TWISTED SISTER

Twisted Sister is a short easy trail that takes you into some quintessential Tasmanian mossy big tree forest. Pools of light illuminate the vivid greens of the ferns and moss of the understory. Overhead the intact crows of a dominant Eucalyptus obliqua forest rise high above the temperate rainforest species.

This was the site of a years-long protest camp to prevent the logging of the forest. This protest was fundamental in achieving protection and subsequent World Heritage Status for large areas of the Florentine, Styx and Tyenna Valleys.

THE LADY BINNEY RESERVE

The Lady Binney Forest Reserve is an accessible grove of large and unique Stringybark trees. An established walking track of 1 km exists but has not been maintained over the last decade.

This forest possibly has the most beautiful understory of all the big tree sites. Tree ferns cover a large section of the trail as well as a carpet of other smaller ferns. At the right time of year, excellent fungi viewing is possible.

TYENNA BIG TREE RESERVE

Home Tree is a short distance from the Lady Binney Reserve, and is one of the widest stringybark trees ever recorded. A short informal walking track leads visitors to the tree, winding its way through a beautiful rainforest understory dense with Leatherwood trees.

Home Tree is just one of several giant Eucalyptus obliqua located in the area. In 2019 the logging machinery was just 150m away from cutting down this tree. The quick work of Big Tree Hunters finding it and reporting its existence saved this tree and the remaining forest.
